In the next two years, Rolf Mützenich will also chair the SPD deputies in the Bundestag. His election as faction leader is clear.

The SPD parliamentary group has Rolf Mützenich was elected its chairman for a further two years. The 64-year-old received 94.7 percent of the votes. Of the 190 MPs present, 180 voted for, nine against and one abstention. There was no opposing candidacy. In his first election to the top of the parliamentary group, Mützenich received 97.7 percent of the votes, in 2021 it was 97.1 percent.

The Cologne native has been a member of the Bundestag for the SPD since 2002 and was their foreign policy spokesman and deputy chairman for foreign affairs and security for a long time. He belongs to the left wing of the SPD.

Mützenich had announced in July that he wanted to run for the post again. In an interview at the time, he said he “still has something to offer” to his group. This is “to promote the cohesion of the parliamentary group and to support the course of a social-democratic government and to influence it with others”.

Mützenich “not at all tired of office”

Last year there was speculation that Mützenich could resign from his post before the end of the two-year electoral term. He then made it clear that he was “not tired of office at all”.

As a possible successor of Mützenich, the deputy parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch has recently been traded. Like Mützenich, the energy and environmental expert belongs to the left wing of the parliamentary group. But Dirk Wiese, the parliamentary group leader responsible for internal affairs and law and spokesman for the conservative Seeheimer Kreis, would also be a possible successor candidate. The next regular election of the parliamentary group leadership will take place after the next federal election in 2025.

In addition to Miersch and Wiese, Gabriela Heinrich, Verena Hubertz, Detlef Müller, Achim Post, Sönke Rix and Dagmar Schmidt were re-elected as Mützenich’s deputies. Post achieved the best result with 91.8 percent of the votes. Katja Mast was also re-elected as the first parliamentary secretary, but she only got 69.4 percent.
