The nationwide strengthening of the AfD has led to a heated debate about the reasons. Despite this, the party continues to gain ground in polls.

The AfD’s survey high continues: In the RTL/ntv “trend barometer”, the AfD gained two percentage points compared to the previous week and, with 19 percent, is now the second strongest party ahead of the SPD (18 percent) and the Greens (14 percent), which remain unchanged.

As was further reported on Tuesday about the survey by the Forsa Institute, the Union lost one percentage point and is currently at 29 percent. The values for the FDP (7 percent) and the left (4 percent) remain unchanged compared to the previous week.

The AfD is currently experiencing a survey at federal and state level with values of 17 to 20 percent – the Union is 27 to 30 percent. In Thuringia and Saxony, the AfD was in first place in the most recent polls, in Brandenburg it was at a similar level to the CDU and SPD. In these three countries are 2024 state elections.

debate about the reasons

Because of the strengthening of the AfD, classified by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a suspected right-wing extremist, a debate has broken out about the reasons for this. One of the reasons given is the public dispute in the traffic light coalition. But the Union parties are also seen as jointly responsible.

“We’ll see where it all takes us,” said AfD co-boss Alice Weidel in Berlin when asked where she saw a realistic limit for the poll values. She is very careful with surveys. “What is reflected here is that people are fed up with everything that comes from the traffic light government and of course from the previous government as well.” Only green policies are enforced.
