Parliament in Canada dissolved: Trudeau calls new elections

An end to the minority government – that is what Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau is hoping for. In September, he will face an early election. It is currently looking good for the liberal – thanks in part to Corona.

In Canada there will be an early election on September 20th. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Governor General Mary Simon, representing Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, has approved the dissolution of Parliament and the election date. He needs a new mandate for his plans to deal with the corona pandemic, said the 49-year-old.

Less than two years after the last election, Trudeau apparently wants to use the move to gain a better position in government. In October 2019, his liberal party had become the strongest force, but it was not enough for a majority in parliament. This was due, among other things, to various political affairs in which Trudeau was involved. He currently governs with a minority government. Regularly would not have been re-elected until 2023.

Trudeau hopes for a tailwind from the vaccination campaign

Trudeau, who has ruled since 2015, is no longer as popular as he once was, but the successful vaccination campaign has given him popularity again. After a slow start, more than 71 percent of Canadians eligible for vaccination are now fully vaccinated, more than 82 percent once.

“We will make decisions that will last not just for the months ahead but for the decades to come,” said Trudeau. “The Canadians deserve a say in this. We will give them that.”

New election tactically motivated?

Polls indicate that Trudeau’s party could again win the election with around 37 percent. The Conservatives are in the polls at 28 percent, the left New Democratic Party at 20 percent. Conservative politicians criticized Trudeau’s decision for a new election as tactically motivated.
