Their son’s life came to an abrupt end one day in March 2021. France and the world were then fighting against a mysterious virus, seeking by all means to protect themselves from the harm of Covid-19. To slow the spread and protect the population, particularly the most vulnerable, the authorities had set up a major vaccination campaign. The question then arose as to what each had received: Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca. Without really knowing what it was about.
Anthony’s parents became connoisseurs, despite themselves. Three years ago, their son, a 6th year medical student in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), died of abdominal venous thrombosis. Ten days earlier, this healthy 24-year-old man received a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
“We are not anti-vax or conspiracy theorists”
Questioned by our colleagues from West France, Anthony’s parents are now waiting to understand what could have killed their son. “We are not anti-vax or conspiracy theorists, we just want to know the truth. Anthony did not drink, did not smoke, Myriam continues. He had a healthy lifestyle and played sports. There is no reason, other than the injection of a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, that could explain why he lost his life,” the mother told our colleagues.
Based in La Turballe, in Loire-Atlantique, Anthony’s parents are wondering in particular about the lot called “ABV 53 00” from which the injection received by Anthony came. After research, their lawyer discovered that Austria had stopped the use of this batch on March 8 after the death of a nurse. It was on that day that the young Frenchman received his dose. Other countries had withdrawn this same batch, some going so far as to suspend AstraZeneca injections. In France, the authorities had chosen to only offer it to people aged over 55.
Nine deaths recorded in March 2021
The European Medicines Agency had established “a possible link with very rare cases of unusual blood clots with low blood platelets” after the injection. On March 16, 2021, we had recorded nine deaths and 25 cases reported to the European agency in all EU member countries (plus the United Kingdom). Twenty million people were then vaccinated with AstraZeneca.
