Rain or snow? That depends on the situation: Winter is coming to Germany.

The new week begins again with snowfall, especially in the mountains. Bring a low Rain and snow in considerable quantities, explained DWD meteorologist Felix Dietzsch on Sunday about the prospects for Monday. “While it snows constantly in the mountains, in the lower altitudes there is sometimes a lively alternation of rain and snowfall, especially below 400 meters,” explained Dietzsch.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a low brought rainfall to the northwest and west of Germany. “Snowfall sets in quickly in the western low mountain ranges, while in the lowlands it mostly rains initially,” explained Dietzsch. The snowfall limit is usually around 400 meters in the west during the day and between 400 and 600 meters in the southwest. To the east it is snowing down to lower altitudes.

In the western mountains there would be larger amounts of fresh snow of up to 15 centimeters. “But even away from the low mountain ranges, there should be enough for a small blanket of snow, at least for a few hours,” said Dietzsch. Large parts of northern Germany and the lowest areas along the Rhine are excluded.

It will be cooler on Tuesday night and where there is still precipitation it will snow even in the lowlands. The next low will approach on Wednesday, bringing snow and sleet, especially in the middle, explained the DWD. The maximum temperatures on Monday are zero to six degrees, on Tuesday it is cooler at minus two to plus four degrees.

“There are still indications that the current weather phase is a longer winter episode,” said Dietzsch. Problems caused by snow, ice and slippery conditions should be taken into account during morning rush hour, warned the DWD.
