December every year not only means the imminent Christmas season, but also the final preparations for the most important tech fair in the western world. At the beginning of January 2022, the CES – the Consumer Electronic Show – will start again in Las Vegas.

The pandemic has no end either in Europe or in the United States of America and the trade fair has been on the brink for a long time. But while this year’s CES 2021 was a tired failure as a pure online event, the organizer, together with the exhibition center and the gaming city of Las Vegas, pulled out all the stops so that the event can take place again as a real event in early 2022. The CES not only invites trade visitors from around the world to the Las Vegas exhibition center, but also to some of the huge Las Vegas hotels around the legendary Strip.

Even if the car manufacturers, gigantic leading actors at their own trade fairs for decades, only play a minor role in the poker metropolis among all the tech, computer and consumer electronics brands, the CES is set for many companies. But you can tell that automakers are tired of the trade fair at the upcoming CES 2022. Like the trade fairs in Europe, the USA or Asia, the former large-scale events are becoming less and less important and the big news comes into the limelight virtually or at in-house events. Therefore, a number of automakers will not be represented at the CES in Las Vegas this time or will only be represented with a small technology program. Years ago, brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, General Motors and Hyundai pushed the gas together in Nevada to present themselves not only as car manufacturers, but as real innovation companies for future mobility.

The big topics at CES 2022 are the Internet of Things, entertainment, robotics, health, home & living, sports and, of course, automotive. The most exciting of all car topics at the fair, which will take place from January 3, 2022, will be drive technologies and highly automated driving. Represented at the fair: Manufacturers such as Daimler, BMW, Waymo, Vinfast, Hyundai, Toyota, Magna, Valeo or Bosch. Ford, the brands of the Volkswagen Group, General Motors or Honda are not there this time and even some well-known high-tech suppliers and automotive start-ups have removed the trend fair from their own calendar at the beginning of the year. For the first time, there will be a hall specially with automotive content at the CES with around 1,700 exhibitors.

Also represented at the desert fair is the renowned Indy Autonomous Challenge, which was won in its most recent edition by the TUM Autonomous Motorsport racing team from the Technical University of Munich. The Technical University of Munich prevailed in a field of 21 universities and won a prize of one million US dollars with its victory. Alex Wischnewski, team leader at TUM Autonomous Motorsport: “Our next goal is to win a fast, autonomous head-to-head race.” In the long term, the technology of the racing cars should also be installed in series vehicles. As a platform and contact exchange, the CES is exactly the right place for this – and exciting too.
