“Our Ones”, novel by Inger-Maria Mahlke: Traces of the Buddenbrooks. – Culture

With Hanseatic reliability, Inger-Marie Mahlke, born in Hamburg in 1977 and raised in Lübeck, has published a novel every two to three years since 2010 until she received the German Book Prize for “Archipelago” in 2018. Then she announced that she would take more time for the next work. This was also reliable, as you can see. Five years later, “Unown” has now been published, an epic of almost five hundred pages in which the lawyer, who has studied, once again demonstrates her penchant and talent for historical research: For “As You Want” from 2015, she went to the Tudor era and in “Archipelago” traces the history of the island of Tenerife, where she spent part of her youth, back to the early 20th century, this time she turns to her hometown of Lübeck to create a broad-based family and… to unfold the social panorama. Which amounts to a collision with the “Buddenbrooks”, the most famous of all Lübeck novels, which appeared in 1901.
