Oscars: “Something like this only happens in movies”

No German film has ever been as successful at the Oscars as “Nothing New in the West”. He took four trophies. But the big winner is “Everything Everywhere All At Once” – also emotionally.

Director Edward Berger stands on the stage of the Kodak Theater. His first Oscar. In front of him are the Hollywood film elite and an audience of millions worldwide, whom he thanks. Behind him are producer Malte Grunert, the actors Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch and the leading actor Felix Kammerer.

Kammerer is 27 years old and from Vienna. It is his first feature film ever. Even before the award ceremony, he couldn’t believe what was happening: “I’m trying to get used to all the circumstances and not go completely crazy.” Three years ago he was still at drama school, now his face is on huge billboards in Hollywood.

Four Oscars for “Nothing New in the West”

The remake of the anti-war classic by Erich Maria Remarque wins four Oscars: Best International Film, Best Score, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design.

Ernestine Hipper from Nuremberg is also responsible for the latter. She was also nominated for the first time. “Mom, Dad: I love you,” she says at the award ceremony.

Ke Huy Quan provides the most emotional moment

Only one film wins more this evening. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” wins seven Oscars – including best picture. Ke Huy Quan also plays. Nominated for best supporting actor, he was already excited before the Oscars: “Oh my god, this is exciting. I can’t believe I’m at the Oscars.”

He doesn’t know yet that he will later provide the most emotional moment of the evening. Before that, moderator Jimmy Kimmel greets the audience. It’s year one after the Will Smith slap scandal. This time it no longer plays a role, with the exception of Kimmel’s sayings: “Five Irish actors have been nominated tonight. The chances of a fight on stage have increased.” But everyone stays calm. Also the Irishman Colin Farrell, although Brandon Fraser and not he becomes the best actor.

There is only one fight. Ke Huy Quan struggles with his composure. “Thank you, thank you all,” he cries, sobbing. He was born in Vietnam and fled to America with his family of eleven. “I was in a refugee camp for a year and somehow I ended up here on the biggest stage in Hollywood. That kind of thing only happens in movies. I can’t believe it happened to me,” he says, full of emotion.

The film “Everything Everywhere All At Once” also received awards for best director, best screenplay and best editing. Michelle Yeoh receives the award for best actress. She is 60 years old, born in Malaysia. It is also her first Oscar. She says the award is “for all the little boys and girls who look like me who are watching tonight.” Also a first time: She is the first Asian woman to win this award.
