There hasn’t been this much party atmosphere at the Oscars for a long time: Ryan Gosling’s musical performance with a song from “Barbie” was the secret highlight of the award ceremony. Also because it was reminiscent of old Hollywood glamor.

Who after the If you didn’t have a catchy tune from “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars, you must have done something wrong: the bright music spectacle with Ryan Gosling dressed entirely in pink as the singer was the secret highlight of the evening. Gosling once again took on the role of Ken from the hit film “Barbie” – and demonstrated his stage presence and charisma as a Hollywood star. Even his colleagues succumbed to his charm: the illustrious audience at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles celebrated the show clapping, singing along, standing.

Gosling and dozens of background dancers clearly had fun throwing themselves into the elaborate choreography. Numerous fans promptly reminded people online Gosling’s beginnings on the American children’s show “Mickey Mouse Club” as a dancing, singing child star. Fans had already asked online in advance to please invite the actor to the Oscar stage with “I’m Just Ken” – and that’s exactly what happened.

Outfits and choreography at the Oscars were reminiscent of old Monroe appearances

The fact that Gosling even brought guitarist Slash on stage as a surprise guest created an additional atmosphere. Gosling’s “Barbie” colleagues Margot Robbie and America Ferrera, as well as his director Greta Gerwig, cheered in the front row like they were at a boy band concert. Even Martin Scorsese was visibly enjoying the song, as a network video shows.

The special thing about Gosling’s performance: True cinephiles immediately recognized the choreography as an homage to Marylin Monroe’s legendary film “Blondes Prefer” from 1953. In it, Marylin Monroe, also dressed entirely in pink, sings the song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”the backup dancers are dressed almost identically to those on Gosling’s Oscar stage.

“I’m Just Ken” was written by American music producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt and was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. However, the prize went to the ballad “What was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas, also from “Barbie”. However, that hardly caused any distress: “I’m Just Ken” was one of the winners of the evening even without Oscar.
