“Oppenheimer” triumphs – Sandra Hülser and German directors come away empty-handed

The biographical film about the creator of the atomic bomb is the big winner at this year’s Oscars, taking home seven trophies. For two German directors, however, the evening is disappointing.

Triumph for “Oppenheimer” at the Oscars: The biographical epic about the inventor of the atomic bomb won the award for best film and six other trophies. “Oppenheimer” maker Christopher Nolan won at the 96th edition. Oscars in Hollywood for Best Director. The Irish Cillian Oppenheimer, who plays the US physicist Robert Oppenheimer, was honored as best male actor.

The German actress Sandra Hülser, who was nominated for her leading role in the French legal thriller “Anatomy of a Case”, came away empty-handed. US actress Emma Stone won in this category for her role in the bizarre Frankenstein adaptation “Poor Things”.

However, Hülser was pleased that the British production “The Zone of Interest,” in which she also plays a leading role, won the Oscar for best international film. The 45-year-old portrays the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß.

“The Zone of Interest” prevailed against, among others, the German school drama “The Teacher’s Room” by director İlker Çatak and the Japanese production “Perfect Days”, which was shot by the veteran German director Wim Wenders.

Robert Downey Jr. won the Oscar for Best Male Supporting Actor for “Oppenheimer.” The 58-year-old plays the politician Lewis Strauss, an adversary of the nuclear physicist. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won best supporting actress for her performance in “The Holdovers.”
