Borussia Dortmund is sixth in the table in the Bundesliga. In the first round of the DFB Cup, the Black and Yellows won 3-0 against 1860 Munich. In the Champions League, BVB narrowly lost the second group game against Manchester City, but still occupied second place after beating Copenhagen 3-0 at the start.
A reasonable start to the season, one might think. sky-Expert Didi Hamann, however, assesses the situation at BVB much more critically. In an interview with the picture-Zeitung denounces the ex-professional’s lack of self-criticism in Dortmund and calls on the Ruhrpott club to “address things as they are.”
Hamann takes the reactions to the 2-1 draw against Manchester City as the reason for his criticism. With the exception of Mats Hummels, the BVB participants would have glossed over the defeat, the 49-year-old thinks: “I was surprised when I heard sports director Sebastian Kehl, whom I respect very much and who did a very good job in the summer. He said, he was proud of the team. And coach Edin Terzic said it was a very good game; player Emre Can said it was an extremely good game. Things are said nicely in Dortmund!”
Hamann explains that BVB should never have lost the game against the Skyblues. “As Hummels analyzed it correctly: Man City was aimless, unimaginative, helpless for 70 to 80 minutes – and still finds a way to win the game. That says as much about Man City as it does about Dortmund,” explains the 59 -time German national player. “If you’re proud of it afterwards in the statements, I wonder what the claims are.”
According to Hamann, if Dortmund wants to fulfill the claim of being a top team, it needs a lot more self-criticism. “It is imperative that the management team clearly addresses things as they are,” he warns sky-Expert. “But instead, such statements give the team an alibi. Losing shouldn’t be okay for Borussia Dortmund.”
Hummels the “true captain”
In addition, the native Oberpfälzer BVB captain Marco Reus in question. Reus had “started the season very well” and had “brought great performances on the pitch.” Nevertheless, Hamann considers Mats Hummels to be the more suitable captain.
When asked about the scene shortly after the final whistle in Manchester, when Hummels spoke to Reus with a raised finger, the former Bayern and Liverpool player said: “If more Dortmund players thought like that, then something like that would happen less often, I understand Hummels there. […] For me, Hummels would be the better choice as captain. Maybe that would also take weight off Reus’ shoulders. Such tones would not hurt if the captain said them after such a game. And if instead Hummels tells the captain on the field what he did wrong – if you can interpret it that way – then that shows somewhere who the real captain is.”
Revierderby: “Signs could not be better for Schalke”
In Hamann’s opinion, the upcoming district derby against Schalke comes at the worst possible time for BVB. “The pressure is on Dortmund. I don’t think it’s out of the question that Schalke can take something with them…” predicts the ex-professional. “The omens couldn’t be better for Schalke. Dortmund had a difficult game on Wednesday and had to run a lot. And Dortmund have struggled to control games so far. Schalke are confident after beating Bochum.”
A key factor on the Dortmund side could be newcomer Salih Özcan, whom the 2005 Champions League winner praised in the highest tones. “Dortmund’s Salih Özcan is a derby player. He can shape the midfield for years – even if it’s still early,” says Hamann. “An excellent transfer! He has good technique, good running and a real fighter. I would have thought that he would have helped Bayern too.”
