A fire killed one person on Sunday evening in the 6th arrondissement of Marseille, franceinfo learned from the Marseille firefighters. Firefighters also took one person to hospital, who was bothered by the smoke and had a slight leg injury. Six people were relocated, emergency services said.

The Marseille firefighters explain that, according to witnesses, the flames were preceded by an explosion heard around 8 p.m. The four-story building, located 24 rue Bossuet, was evacuated, as well as the two neighboring buildings “as a precaution“, specified the Marseille town hall.

The origin of the fire remains unknown

The firefighters spent the night on site, there were 70 of them at the height of the fire which was contained around 11 p.m., when the emergency services were able to search the rubble. They discovered a body there, the identity of which has not yet been revealed.
