This is the fifth time that Gad Elmaleh lends his voice to the hero of Me, ugly and meant. In Minions 2: Once Upon a Time Gru by Kyle Balda, Brad Ableson and Jonathan Del Val, the actor had fun imagining the voice of a Gru in shorts facing ever more adorable Minions.
“The public had to recognize Gru in my voice and immediately realize that it was Gru as a child,” the actor told 20 minutes. He explains that he relied on the vocal performance of Steve Carell, who doubles the character in English, to develop his own.
A villain for life
Gad Elmaleh knew how to affix his stamp and an accent “coming from who knows where” to Gru, a character to whom he has become attached over the years, for his evil spirit. “I would like to pop a child’s balloon with a needle,” he laughs.
And the actor to insist: “As long as Gru is mean, I will continue to do Gru. It doesn’t have to change. If he gets nice, it’s not okay. It’s true that we can’t imagine the fourth part of the saga Me, ugly and meanwhich has just been announced, be called Me, ugly and nice !
