Omikron: boosting instead of waiting for an adapted vaccine – health

from

Whenever a new Sars-CoV-2 variant appears, the question also arises: Will the vaccines hold up? It was no different a good two weeks ago when the world first heard about the Omikron mutant. It will be a few more weeks before there will be reliable answers to the question of how well the currently available vaccines help against the coronavirus, which has changed again. While almost nothing is known about Omikron apart from the genetic analysis revealing over 50 mutations, manufacturers are already working on developing vaccines specially adapted to this variant. Millions of doses of Omicron vaccine could be delivered in three to four months. The mRNA vaccines in particular can be adapted very easily to new virus variants, which is related to their type of construction.
