Omar Sy or Eva Green in the jury chaired by Greta Gerwig

Omar Sy will have his busy schedule from May 14 to 25. A fortnight before the race for the Palme d’Or, the 77th Cannes Film Festival announced on Monday the composition of its jury, of which the actor is a member.

The festival has chosen four men and four women who will officiate under the presidency of director Greta Gerwig, a figure of American auteur cinema who became queen of the box office with barbie last year. At 40, she is the youngest president since Sophia Loren in 1966.

Objective: decide between 22 films in competition

On his jury is therefore Omar Sy, 46 years old, who is taking a new step in an exceptional career since his first steps in schoolboy humor (Omar and Fred) until his early career in Hollywood, as an actor and producer. Going through his popular successes in France (Untouchables).

Cannes therefore chose one of the stars of a French cinema which aims to be more representative of the diversity of society: Omar Sy was born in the Paris suburbs, in Trappes, to parents who came from the border between Senegal and Mauritania. The actor, who will debate with the other members of the jury to decide between the 22 films in competition, should cause a sensation on the red carpet: he is both one of the favorite personalities of the French and a popular performer around the world, notably since the success of the Netflix series Lupine.

At her side will sit the French actress Eva Green, 43, known as well for her roles in France (most recently that of Milady in The three Musketeers) than in Hollywood, with Tim Burton in particular, or alongside Daniel Craig in the James Bond films.

Lily Gladstone, youngest member of the jury

A year after walking the red carpet for Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese, a role for which she was nominated for an Oscar, actress Lily Gladstone, from a Native American background, also joins the jury, of which she is the youngest at 37 years old.

Added to this list is the Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino (The traitor), 54 years old, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda, 61 years old, Palme d’Or in 2018 for A family matterthe Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona (The circle of snow), 48 years old, the Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, 50 years old, and the Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, 48 years old.
