Olympic Games 1972 Munich: Olympic Park celebrates 50th anniversary – Munich

A new building decorates the Olympiasee. The blue-green pavilion is part of the new anniversary exhibition and will be there for the next six months. After the two-year Corona break, the Olympic Park has come up with some ideas for the anniversary year: In addition to the traditional Easter festival, there are numerous exhibitions and festivals.

The three-part anniversary exhibition was officially opened to visitors at the weekend. Topics are the past, the present and also the future of sport in the Olympic Park. In addition to the exhibitions in the Olympic Hall and in the Olympic Tower, there is the “Sport-Hub 72” exhibition in the pavilion. It should be the central point of contact for the commemoration campaign, explains Olympiapark boss Marion Schöne. With its unusual but central location, the pavilion in the park is easy to reach.

From the outside it is reminiscent of the 1972 Olympic Games: with the blue-green color concept and the architectural style with the Mero system, it is a homage to the original Olympic Pavilion, which was then on Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz (formerly Coubertinplatz ) was standing. The oriels characteristic of the architectural style of the 1970s, the striking tubular steel and the colorful play of colors are similar. “That has its charm,” agrees Marion Schöne.

Anyone who crosses the footbridge into the pavilion will not only find an exhibition about the history, present and future of sport in the Olympic Park. The “Sport-Hub 72” is also a place of learning. Visitors can prove their skills in table football or long jump there, and there is also space for memories: stories about concerts, tournaments or encounters in the park are exchanged in a digital guest book. The pavilion was designed together with the Cologne agency “facts and fiction”. Creative director Andreas Horbelt worked on the interior design of the pavilion together with eight employees. His goal was to turn the “Sport-Hub 72” into a small “gem”. During the day the pavilion should be a meeting place, in the evening it will brightly illuminate the Olympiasee.

The cultural department of the city of Munich is planning around 150 events for the anniversary year. The traditional Easter festival under the motto “Easter in XXL format” is also part of this in the Olympic Park. On Easter Sunday, the park celebrates Football Day with a tournament, and there are also numerous activities related to this sport. In addition, those who love shopping can stroll through the 1970s market on market Sunday. On Easter Monday, the Olympic mascot Waldi celebrates his comeback on “Dachshund Day”. With the Easter holidays, tours in the stadium or on the tent roof start again in the Olympic Park.

Since the Olympic attack on September 5th is also to be commemorated in the anniversary year, the cultural department is addressing the events surrounding the terrorist attack with a number of programs and a commemorative event. With the “Twelve Months – Twelve Names” project, various institutions in Munich devote themselves to one victim every month.

The anniversary celebrations will culminate at the Festival of Games, Sports and the Arts from July 1st to 9th. Among other things, the opening ceremony – a parade that recreates the entry of the Olympians – and the sports games 2022 should be magnets for spectators.
