Olympia 2022 – ski jumping: Markus Eisenbichler reacts with joy to the bronze miracle

It wasn’t just a very successful team competition for the German ski jumpersbut also a mental rollercoaster ride.

In Zhangjiakou, Karl Geiger, Markus Eisenbichler, Constantin Schmid and Stephan Leyhe were only beaten by Austria and Slovenia after a gripping competition. Bronze!

Eisenbichler in particular stood out with two dream flights of 136.0 and 139.5 m. He wrote his own special story with it. At the silver medal in Pyeongchang 2018, Eisenbichler was replaced by Leyhe before the team competition by then national coach Werner Schuster.

“Eisei, I don’t begrudge you the medal,” he said now Eurosport-Expert: “‘I took your medal away’, you said to me at the time. Now you have it.”

139.5 meters! Eisenbichler has the best jump in the entire team competition

Incidentally, the medal should quickly find a new owner in Eisenbichler’s nephew, who was just a few days old: “The little one has something to suck on,” said the 30-year-old, who was completely done with the world. Drunk with joy, he looked back on the emotional day: “I hoped, I prayed. Four years ago I wasn’t allowed to hop along, now I really wanted to have this shitty medal. I’ll drink two beers. But after two halves I’m probably so full that I don’t know which is up and which is down.”

.The DSV-Adler became Olympic champions in 1994, 2002 and 2014. After silver for Katharina Althaus and bronze for Geiger in the individual, it was the third medal for the German ski jumping team at the Beijing Winter Games.

“It means everything to us!” Geiger extremely happy with bronze
