Olympia 2022: Mayer wins gold in the Super G – two Germans in the top ten – Sport

Austria’s Matthias Mayer won the gold medal in the super-G at the Olympic Winter Games in China. The 31-year-old was 0.04 seconds faster than the surprise second-placed Ryan Cochran-Siegle from the USA. Bronze went to Norwegian skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, 0.42 seconds back.

For Mayer it was the third Olympic gold after the downhill in Sochi 2014 and the Super-G in Pyeongchang 2018. Downhill Olympic champion Beat Feuz from Switzerland retired. The best German starter was Romed Baumann in seventh place. One place behind was Andreas Sander.

Simon Jocher finished 13th, Josef Ferstl finished 18th. Dominik Schwaiger was not able to start. He fell on the downhill on Monday and injured his forearm.

National coach Christian Schwaiger was happier with the results than the day before, but also said, referring to Thomas Dreßen, who was still missing after knee surgery: “Unfortunately, we don’t have Matthias Mayer with us. We have one, but he’s injured at home.” Ferstl congratulated the gold winner Mayer: “The guy’s really brutal. He’s a very, very great athlete. He’s really to be envied.”
