A World War II bomb discovered in Osnabrück was detonated in a controlled manner on Sunday. The evacuation area was then released.

The explosive ordnance clearance service detonated the bomb in the early afternoon. Experts examined the dud in the late afternoon and found that the 50-kilogram US bomb was “in poor condition”. The city of Osnabrück shared this in their live ticker with. By morning, around 10,000 people had had to leave their homes and apartments in the evacuation area.

After evacuation in the restricted area: the city initiates 27 procedures

Before that, employees and volunteers from the fire brigade, technical relief organization (THW), security service and police went from door to door to check whether all citizens had left the restricted area. Those who are found are threatened with a fine of 300 euros. According to the city, it has initiated 27 administrative offense proceedings.

300 people use the collection point

During the evacuation, residents of the restricted area were able to stay in the Schinkel comprehensive school. According to the city, around 300 people used the offer by noon.

Train travelers are also affected

The defusing also affected travelers on the railway line between Belm and Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof. As the track on their website reports that the route was temporarily closed. This affected the RE9 line between Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof and Bremerhaven-Lehe, and a replacement bus service was set up between Bohmte and Osnabrück.
