Olaf Scholz follows the Merkel era – the change of government in pictures

The SPD politician Olaf Scholz is the ninth Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany – and the fourth SPD Chancellor. In the election for Chancellor in the Bundestag on Wednesday morning, 395 MPs voted for Scholz. There were 303 votes against and six abstentions. Three of the 707 votes cast were invalid. For the so-called chancellor majority, 369 votes were necessary.

Scholz then received the certificate of appointment from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace. The new ministers should also take up their posts in the afternoon.

Her 16-year term of office ends with the election of Olaf Scholz: Angela Merkel is no longer Federal Chancellor and is retiring.
