The consequences of pollution at sea probably linked to the wild degassing of a ship discovered on Friday off Corsica are already visible. According to statements from the maritime prefecture to AFP, oil residues were discovered on a beach in Solaro.

“The residues are distributed over approximately 500 meters long and 50 centimeters wide in a discontinuous manner”, specified the prefecture, adding that means were deployed to collect these remains of oil.

Beach access prohibited

“After reconnaissance on site yesterday evening (Sunday), these are the only traces discovered since Saturday” on the coast, she said. Monday, the gendarmes and firefighters must carry out reconnaissance on land to identify “possible other areas of stranding or presence of oil at sea”, according to the prefecture. A drone is also mobilized.

The prefect of Haute-Corse is expected on site in the morning. In a press release, the prefecture recalls that access to beaches and swimming remain strictly prohibited and that the firefighters or the gendarmerie must be contacted immediately in the event of the discovery of oil residues.
