OGC Nice – FC Basel: Swiss supporters not banned but very supervised on Thursday

They “move in numbers and love sulphurous atmospheres. Expressing his “very great concern”, Christian Estrosi issued a press release to demand that “Swiss supporters do not make the trip” to Nice on Thursday, on the occasion of the reception of FC Basel for the quarter-final of the Europa League Conference. The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture has decided: no ban but very strict supervision to prevent “serious risks to safety”.

A decree dated Monday thus stipulates that “any person claiming to be a supporter of the FC Basel club or behaving as such” will not be authorized “to drive or park on the public road” in a good number of streets of the city center, from the start of the day. The surroundings of the Allianz Riviera stadium, where clashes broke out with FC Cologne in September, will be prohibited between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Firecrackers, smoke bombs and proscribed projectiles

“Firecrackers or smoke bombs, flags and banners whose inscriptions call for provocation, violence or hatred and any object that can be used as a projectile” will also be prohibited, notes the prefecture.

In the first leg, last Friday, in Switzerland, the Niçois, the last French representatives on the European scene, had led 2-1 before being caught and conceding a draw in Basel. Ball in the center therefore for this return match.
