Official end result of the Berlin repeat election: SPD remains just ahead of the Greens

Now it’s official: the state electoral committee has announced the result of the repeat election in Berlin. Nothing changes in the mandates. The SPD’s lead over the Greens has melted. A recount in Lichtenberg was rejected.

A good two weeks after the repeat election in Berlin, the state electoral committee announced the final official result on Monday afternoon. So lie SPD and Greens each 18.4 percent right behind the election winner CDU. The Christian Democrats are coming up 28.2 percent.

As a result, the CDU received 52 seats, the SPD and the Greens each 34, the left 22 seats and the AfD 17 seats. A total of 38 direct candidates were newly elected, 121 mandates were confirmed and 27 MPs lost their seats. This also includes the FDP around top candidate Sebastian Czaja.

The SPD’s lead over the Greens in the final result has shrunk from 105 to 53 votes, as previously leaked.

The state electoral committee rejected a recount in the Lichtenberg constituency 3. In the constituency, the first and second place winners are only a few votes apart. That’s why the left had requested a recount. In addition, 466 postal votes were counted late in Lichtenberg.

Berlin’s state returning officer Stephan Bröchler said on Monday that the state electoral committee had looked at the transcripts from the polling stations and spoken to the district returning officer. He recommended that the panel deny the request for a recount. The state election committee followed this vote with two votes against and one abstention.

For ten days, the CDU, SPD, Greens and Left have been exploring in different constellations whether there is a basis for starting coalition negotiations and a joint government. It is not yet possible to foresee which coalition option will ultimately be implemented.

While the CDU and SPD have completed their exploratory talks, the SPD, Greens and Left Party met for the third time on Monday. The CDU and the Greens are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday.
