Of all the pop musicians who grew up under real German socialism and made their careers there, he was certainly the one with the greatest international vision. Ulrich Swillms, nicknamed Ed, did things with synthesizers in East Germany in the 1980s that even people in the West could only helplessly marvel at. Swillms made the maximum creative capital out of the head start in training and studies that he – like most artists in the East – had as a university graduate.
