Obituary for the composer Gloria Coates: The cool – culture

The dazzling art of glissando was what the American composer Gloria Coates was fascinated by: surfing the sounds over distant pitches, flatly slipping from tone to tone. The distinctive charm for the ears, something like their mark of recognition. And since the glissando technique can be mastered above all by stringed instruments, in addition to the human voice, the guitar or the trombone, it was only logical that Gloria Coates was able to achieve her first major success with a significant work title: “Music on Open Strings”. . The 1973 composition was hotly debated years later at the Warsaw Autumn Festival, which she called her first symphony. With the piece in 1980 she was the first woman to be performed at the Munich concert series Musica viva. Her music was also noted at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music.
