Nuremberg: Renovation of the Frauenkirche is progressing – Bavaria

The interior renovation of the Nuremberg Frauenkirche on the main market continues to progress. The work is on schedule and the reopening is planned for February 3, 2024 with a service with Bamberg Auxiliary Bishop Herwig Gössl, as a spokeswoman for the Catholic City Church announced on Thursday.

The Frauenkirche, on whose balcony the Christ Child opens the famous Christkindlesmarkt with his prologue, has been closed to the celebration of church services and to visitors for more than half a year. The reason is the renovation work that became necessary inside the church after several decades. Surfaces and glazing are cleaned and preserved. Workers are also replacing the lighting and improving the statics of the roof structure and parts of the facade. In the coming months, work will be done on the windows, furniture and vestibules inside the church, among other things.

The city church estimates the costs for the renovation to be around 3.2 million euros. 65 percent of this is taken over by the Archdiocese of Bamberg. The church foundation finances the rest and, according to information, can already rely on donations amounting to around 300,000 euros. The donors include the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the Association for the Preservation of the Nuremberg Frauenkirche as well as the city of Nuremberg and the Middle Franconia district.
