Nuremberg: Prison sentences for bribery in taxi industry exams – Bavaria

A former employee of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Nuremberg has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for cheating on exams for aspiring taxi drivers. A jury at the Nuremberg district court found the 54-year-old guilty of bribery and tax evasion on Monday, a court spokeswoman said. The court also ordered the confiscation of around 111,000 euros from the man. This is the sum that he is said to have earned from his actions.

A 61-year-old was also sentenced to one and a half years in prison without parole for aiding and abetting bribery. The case against a third defendant was discontinued on the first day of the trial in October against a monetary condition. He was also accused of aiding and abetting.

The public prosecutor’s office had accused the main defendant of having scheduled special exam dates for prospective taxi operators between 2016 and 2018, during which he assured, in return for payment, that the examinees would pass. The examination board was not properly staffed, it helped the candidates with the tasks and then illegally issued examination certificates. In this way, the man is said to have earned tens of thousands of euros. The 61-year-old is also said to have recruited examinees from Berlin, brought them to Nuremberg and registered a false residence for them. The judgment is not final.
