On the occasion of the memorial service for football legend Franz Beckenbauer, former Bayern boss Uli Hoeneß thanked the “Kaiser”, among other things, for the pride that the Germans created at the 2006 World Cup. However, he wants nothing to do with the AfD.

The former boss of FC Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeneß gave a moving eulogy at the farewell of Franz Beckenbauer in the Munich Allianz Arena. When acknowledging all the successful stages of the “Kaiser’s” life, he particularly emphasized the positive pride that many Germans had in their country, which Beckenbauer helped initiate. The 2006 tournament that Beckenbauer brought to Germany, which went down in history as a summer fairy tale, “started a process” and that is exactly what is desirable again for the future. However, Hoeneß emphasizes very clearly that he “does not want the AfD involved” in this context.

It is not the first time that Hoeneß has mocked the right-wing party. In the fall of 2023, for example, he said in a statement: “If the government worked to some extent, the AfD’s shares would be halved,” at the same time launching an all-round blow against the current traffic light government.

Not the first AfD criticism from Hoeneß

In 2013, Hoeneß also found clear words by showing his feelings about right-wing radicals in general: “FC Bayern does not tolerate Nazis!” Corresponding groups were banned from stadiums in Munich. “We don’t want money from people who aren’t prepared to integrate into society,” said the ex-Bayern boss.

In addition to Hoeneß, other celebrities also spoke at the memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer. Federal President Steinmeier and Prime Minister Söder, as political representatives, praise Beckenbauer’s achievements. In addition to Hoeneß, President Herbert Hainer speaks from the club’s side.

As a representative of Franz Beckenbauer’s generation of players, the 72-year-old Hoeneß is also a particularly close companion of the deceased. The “Kaiser” is the “greatest personality that FC Bayern has ever had”.
