An unbelievable case in Northern Ireland: a man is nailed to a fence. The brutal attack is reminiscent of methods used by paramilitary groups. But what’s behind it?

A man in Northern Ireland has been nailed to a fence by unknown people. He was discovered with a nail through each hand on a fence in a car park in the seaside town of Bushmills shortly after midnight on Sunday, Northern Ireland police said. He is being treated in a hospital, but his life is not in danger. Nevertheless, a police spokesman described the injuries as “potentially life-changing.”

According to police, two vans were also set on fire in the parking lot. One of them belonged to the victim. Graffiti on a nearby wall is also linked to the crime. The police spokesman described the attack as sinister and added: “This brutal attack by people who violated the human rights of others must be condemned from all sides.” He called on witnesses to contact the police.

The police initially did not provide any information about the possible perpetrators. According to The Times newspaper, the investigation also targeted paramilitary groups. Armed splinter groups are still active in Northern Ireland more than 25 years after the end of the civil war between Catholic supporters of a unification of the two parts of Ireland and Protestant supporters of the union of Northern Ireland with Great Britain. Outbreaks of violence, attempted assassinations and violent cases of vigilantism occur again and again.
