North Korea’s satellite launch on Wednesday failed, according to North Korean state media. The new carrier rocket “Cheollima-1” crashed into the sea “after losing thrust due to an abnormal ignition of the second stage,” reported the state news agency KCNA in an unusually candid admission of a technical failure in the north. According to the report, a new start attempt should be made as soon as possible. The South Korean military said it recovered parts of the launch vehicle. Images released by the military showed debris being pulled from the water. The launch has meanwhile triggered alarms in parts of South Korea and Japan. The USA, South Korea and Japan condemned the launch in the strongest possible terms. The three countries would remain vigilant with great urgency, said a statement from Japan’s foreign ministry. The US State Department had said before the downing on Wednesday that any North Korean launch using ballistic missile technology would violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. It was North Korea’s sixth satellite launch attempt and the first since 2016. It was intended to put the first spy satellite into orbit.
