Former US President Trump won the primary election in rural, conservative North Dakota. This means he is heading into today’s Super Tuesday with a tailwind, when voting will take place in a dozen states.
Donald Trump has achieved another victory in the race for the Republican nomination for the presidential election: He won the primary election in North Dakota. At the election meetings called caucuses, the 77-year-old prevailed against his internal party rival Nikki Haley on Monday evening (local time).
Trump continues his winning streak
The rural state with the capital Bismarck is conservative and has around 775,000 inhabitants. However, North Dakota has no particular significance in the race for the candidacy. There are only 29 of the 2,429 delegates up for grabs.
Nevertheless, Trump is continuing his winning streak, which was briefly broken last Sunday by Haley’s first primary election victory: The 52-year-old won in Washington DC, the capital district that is considered a stronghold of Trump opponents. However, Trump is still considered the clear favorite in the race for the party’s presidential nomination, which has now developed into a duel with Haley.
Preliminary decision on Super Tuesday?
There could be a preliminary decision tonight in our time, the so-called Super Tuesday in the USA. Then the Republicans and Democrats will hold primaries in more than a dozen states, including Alabama, California, Colorado, Minnesota, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
The vote will be taken to decide who should run as a candidate for each party in the presidential election at the beginning of November. The candidates are then officially chosen at party conferences in the summer.
On the Democratic side, incumbent Joe Biden is considered established. At the moment it seems that Biden and Trump will meet again in the actual presidential election in November.
