In the third new episode of “Nord bei Nordwest” Hauke Jacobs falls into a coma. He then experiences the same day again – but this time everything is a little different.

For a brief moment you imagine yourself in “Groundhog Day”: Hauke Jacobs (Hinnerk Schönemann) is woken up by the ringing cell phone that his dog Holly has brought to his bed – and is called to a farm where he is supposed to help a sow give birth to her piglets. Just like 24 hours before.

But unlike the classic film with Bill Murray, the same day is not played out here over and over again. Rather, things are different when repeated. When Jacobs arrives at the farm, to his surprise his police colleague Hannah Wagner (Jana Klinge), who is now a veterinarian, is waiting for him. Jule Christiansen (Marleen Lohse), on the other hand, works with him at the station.

“North by Northwest”: Hauke Jacobs is in a coma

If Hauke Jacobs initially believes that the two women were joking with him, he soon learns the bitter truth: he was critically injured during a police operation. Just like the shooter, the murderer Wigald Tomke (Milton Welsh), who escaped from prison. Both are in a coma, but only one will survive. Namely the one that other people still remember.

And so Tomke hunts down all the people who are close to Jacobs in the parallel world. He, in turn, tries to stop the murderer. An explosive cat-and-mouse game ensues, in which Holly, of all people, the dog ends up playing a crucial role.

With “The Last Ferry”, the crime series “Nord bei Nordwest” sets a new tone in the third of three new episodes: it follows the trail of well-known Hollywood works. In fact, it wasn’t “Groundhog Day” that was inspired, but rather the films based on the screenplays by Charlie Kaufmann that were popular in the noughties. Films like “Being John Malkovich”, “Adaptation” or “Don’t forget me!”, in which the line between reality and the dream world is blurred. “The Last Ferry” does not achieve the class and depth of thought of these role models. But in the context of a prime-time crime thriller, that’s no small achievement.

And non-film buffs are also catered for: Hauke Jacobs finally ends up in bed with one of the two women who adore him.

“North at northwest – The Last Ferry” runs on Thursday, January 18th at 8:15 p.m. on Erste
