Nora Krug: What does home mean? – Society

A visit to the illustrator Nora Krug in New York, who deals with German identity, the long shadow of war and the nature of tyranny.

Of

Christian Zaschke, New York

Even today, after 18 years in New York, Nora Krug is sometimes very aware that she is German. For example, the other day, in this Brooklyn restaurant, not far from the house where she lives with her American husband, their daughter, and their elderly cat, Rusty. The daughter spoke happily in German. Most of the guests at the restaurant were Orthodox Jews, as were the operators. No problem at all, no one seemed to even notice that German was being spoken. Only Nora Krug noticed it after all. Very clearly.
