This non-fiction book is not about dinosaurs, but about squirrels. Can it be that difficult? It can. In order to push his theme through, the narrator-squirrel has to fight a tough battle in this absurdly cheerful non-fiction book. Against every child’s favorite: the Tyrannosaurus rex.
A particularly self-absorbed specimen of this species forces its way into the action on almost every page, so it doesn’t matter with what enormous verve the poor squirrel presents the information about his fellow squirrels. It tries action (some squirrels can glide!), cuteness (baby squirrels: “So cute!”) and extremes (the biggest squirrel, the smallest).
The T-Rex finds itself much more exciting – but that’s not necessarily true
But the T-Rex keeps running into the picture, finds everything “desolate”, asks for silence because he would rather watch a film, and claims that dinosaurs are much more exciting. At some point the police have to come.
Ultimately, the book is neither about squirrels nor dinosaurs. Rather, it’s a very funny lesson in attention economics. Because of the bitter argument between the two (emotion!), you end up remembering the squirrel information: Did you know that the smallest species of squirrel only measures 13 centimeters?
