1 – Choosing a tree that is too big or too small

The most common mistake occurs when choosing your Christmas tree. Because your tree just needs to be too big or too small to ruin all your effects!

We will therefore avoid the mini-tree in a room with XXL dimensions, otherwise it will not really stand out from the rest of the decorations. Conversely, a tree that is too large and too bushy gives the impression that the room is cramped and the decoration overwhelming.

Ideally, you should be able to move around the room smoothly. If you opt for a large to very large format, make sure that the top of the tree does not touch the ceiling.

In a very small interior, don’t hesitate to give in to the “no tree” trend, opting for an alternative adapted to your interior and in line with your tastes.

2 – Overload the tree

Once you have unpacked the garlands and decorations, it is tempting to use everything to decorate the tree. However, this is not really a good idea!

An overloaded tree ends up looking messy – when it doesn’t look like it’s about to collapse under decorations.

To decorate the tree without missing a beat, it’s better to choose a theme and a palette inspired by the trendy colors of Christmas 2023 or, quite simply, your desires! The good idea is to keep a light hand on the garlands, or even remove them. This bias allows you to better showcase your most beautiful glass or paper decorations.

3 – Wrong order to install the decorations

Obviously, we can’t wait to decorate the tree! And this is where we often make a common mistake: placing decorations in the wrong order!

If we start by placing the Christmas balls, they will be hidden by the garlands. And while placing the star at the end as a finishing touch is a good idea in Christmas TV movies, in real life it sometimes ends up with decorations that are hung up along the way and end up broken on the ground !

To avoid any incidents, we systematically arrange the decorations starting from the top and going downwards. And we start with the star, moving on to the garlands. We then take care to install the decorations to hang towards the end of the branches, in order to highlight them.

4 – Bet everything on trends

When decorating the tree, sometimes you run out of inspiration. We then turn to the trends side. Frosty Christmas, nature spirit, Scandi atmosphere or traditional decoration in red and green… The decoration trends for Christmas 2023 are varied.

A 100% trendy tree is undoubtedly stunning in photos, but it can be a little too impersonal in our living room.

To create a truly warm decor, we keep this decoration that has been with us for years and to which lovely memories are attached, or we hang these Christmas decorations made with the children… even if they are not perfect!

5 – Forgetting to secure the tree

The Christmas tree magnetizes the gaze of all the guests. It can also arouse the desire of our pets. More importantly: it can give very bad ideas to toddlers.

To avoid breakage and domestic incidents, it is tempting to simply put decorations out of reach of paws and little hands. However, this idea is not the most aesthetic!

First precaution: always make sure that the tree is secure and cannot be knocked over. Also remember to adapt the decorations to the age of your guests. For the youngest, we avoid, for example, very small decorations that could be swallowed, as well as glass, which we replace for example with paper.
