The youngest son of the Greek ex-king Constantine II married the Swiss billionaire daughter Nina Flohr in Athens. Prince Philippos and Flohr had already been officially married in December in the Swiss holiday resort of St. Moritz – now the Greek Orthodox wedding followed in the cathedral of Athens. Several hundred people watched the spectacle. There was no official guest list, but the former Spanish Queen Sofia as well as Prince Michael of Kent and the sister of the Danish Queen Margrethe II, Benedicts of Denmark, attended the wedding.
Lady Diana was the groom’s godmother
Prince Philip is the youngest member of the former royal family of Greece. His father Constantine II was deposed in 1974 after a referendum and the monarchy in Greece was abolished. The former royal family of Greece lives in a villa on the Peloponnese peninsula during the summer months, otherwise mainly abroad. The relationship between the Greeks and their former royals was disturbed for a long time – the reason for this was King Constantine’s controversial role during the Greek military dictatorship in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, however, he is seen as a historical figure.
The cathedral of Athens has a special meaning for the ex-royal family: It is there that the then Crown Prince Constantine II married the Danish Princess Anne-Marie in 1964. The godmother of the current groom Philip was the late British Princess Diana.
