no religious motive, assures the suspect of the knife attack in Montpel

The investigations continue, after the attack on a woman, Monday, on the Charles-de-Gaulle esplanade, in Montpellier (Hérault). A man, an Eritrean in an irregular situation on French territory, is accused of having attacked the victim with a knife, while she was sitting with her sister on the terrace of a café.

The suspect, who was arrested and placed in police custody, did not really explain his gesture, reports Free lunch. According to the Montpellier prosecutor’s office, the man, who fled his country for political reasons, is an Orthodox Christian, and claims not to have acted for a religious reason. The prosecutor, Fabrice Belargent, however indicated Tuesday afternoon to the regional daily that “these statements are not verified at this stage”.

The victim, whose condition is reassuring, like his sister who was present during the attack, indicated that they did not know the suspect.
