No specific danger to the population

Ex-RAF terrorists Staub and Garweg are also believed to be in Berlin
The former RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg are probably in Berlin. And although both could be dangerous, according to the LKA Lower Saxony, there is “no concrete danger situation” for Berlin.
The investigators warned that there could be weapons and explosives in the apartments of the two wanted people. This could pose a danger to the population. However, there is “no concrete threat situation” for Berlin, the LKA Lower Saxony made clear in the evening.
However, it cannot be ruled out that the suspected robbers Staub and Garweg could pose a danger. The public prosecutor’s office and the LKA continued to ask the public for help in finding the fleeing suspects, but at the same time called for vigilance and caution.
Bomb attack and raids
Specifically, Staub, Garweg and Klette are accused of carrying out an explosive attack on the Weiterstadt correctional facility (JVA), which was under construction, in Hesse in March 1993. The explosion caused damage to the building amounting to around 123 million German marks.
In addition, the trio is said to have carried out six armed robberies on cash-in-transit vehicles and supermarkets in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia between 1999 and 2016. Specifically, according to the Verden public prosecutor’s office, Burdock, Staub and Garweg are said to be responsible for crimes in Stuhr, Wolfsburg, Hildesheim, Cremlingen, Bochum and Duisburg. The trio is also accused of attempted murder because shots were allegedly fired during robberies.
Bazooka grenade and Kalashnikov found
Investigators found, among other things, explosives, several weapons and a rocket-propelled grenade in Klette’s home. These include a Kalashnikov, a submachine gun and a handgun with ammunition.
Because of the finds, Klette’s home on Sebastianstrasse in Kreuzberg was evacuated on Wednesday. At times, people were also brought to safety in a building opposite and the street was partially closed. All residents have now been able to return to their apartments.
Third generation of the Red Army Faction
The Verden public prosecutor’s office and the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office have been searching for Klette and the former RAF terrorists Garweg and Staub for decades. They belong to the so-called third generation of the RAF.
The RAF was formed in the early 1970s from radicalized former members of the West German student movement. Until the 1990s, the group carried out numerous attacks in Germany, in which a total of 35 people were murdered and many injured.
