Worldwide demonstrations in front of Cuba’s embassies

In the past three weeks, Cuban embassies around the world have become the scene of demonstrations for and against the leadership in Havana. The occasion was the Cuban national holiday on July 26th and the anti-government protests that take place on the Caribbean island.

This week, around two dozen countries joined a call by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, including Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador. Blinken had urged the Cuban government to “respect the legally guaranteed rights and freedoms of the Cuban people” and “release those captured for exercising their right to peaceful protest”.

Meanwhile, Cuba accused the US of launching a social media campaign aimed at destabilizing the socialist-led country. The Cuban foreign minister called on the US government to end the embargo that has existed on his country since 1962.
