The army says it accidentally killed 85 people in a village in Nigeria. The actual target was bandits who were wreaking havoc in the region.

The Nigerian Army has one Drone strike accidentally kills at least 85 civilians. The disaster management agency said on Facebook that 85 dead people had already been buried after the attack in a village in the northwestern state of Kaduna on Sunday. The search for further victims is ongoing. A spokesman confirmed the information on Tuesday.

The army admitted on Monday that it had accidentally hit villagers celebrating a Muslim festival in the village of Tudun Biri during a drone strike against militias on Sunday evening. The army initially did not provide any information on the number of deaths. Villagers also spoke of 85 dead, including many women and children.

Nigeria’s army is fighting against armed gangs

Nigeria’s armed forces are carrying out air strikes against so-called bandit militias in the northwest and northeast of the country. The gangs are primarily active in northwestern Nigeria; their bases are located deep in the forests. They raid and plunder villages and kidnap residents in order to extort money for ransom.

Jihadists had also taken control of large areas in northeastern Nigeria, but were recently pushed back. More than 40,000 people have been killed in fighting since 2009 and two million people have been displaced.
