A village in northern Nigeria has apparently been targeted by the radical Islamic group Boko Haram several times in a row. According to police, the militants killed around 40 villagers.

In Nigeria, around 40 villagers were killed in a suspected attack by the radical Islamic group Boko Haram. Boko Haram fighters initially attacked the village of Gurokayeya in Yobe state, killing at least 17 people, police said.

When the villagers later returned from the funeral, an explosive device exploded. At least 20 people died.

Terror through attacks and kidnappings

The incident was the first major attack in the northeastern state in 18 months, said police spokesman Abdulkarim Dungus. There was initially no confession from Boko Haram.

The Islamist group has repeatedly killed and kidnapped villagers in the past, particularly in neighboring Borno state. Borno is the main theater of a 14-year war waged by insurgents against the Nigerian central government.
