Neymar apparently sustained a serious injury in Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-1 win at AS St. Etienne.
After a duel with his opponent Macon, the Brazilian stepped on his long leg and severely twisted his left ankle. The 29-year-old lay on the lawn with his face contorted with pain and after a short break in treatment was taken off the field on a stretcher.
“At the moment there is nothing to say. He was in pain from the twisting of his left ankle. Tomorrow he will be examined. Then we will know a little more,” said Mauricio Pochettino at the press conference after the game.
According to L’Equipe Neymar could be out for up to ten weeks. Further investigations on Monday should therefore provide clarity about the severity of the injury.
PSG star Neymar reports after injury
Neymar wrote on Instagram: “Let’s take a rest. Unfortunately, these setbacks are part of an athlete’s life. Cheer up and go on. I’ll come back better and stronger.”
The Parisians were down 1-0 after a goal by Denis Bouanga after 23 minutes, but turned the game around after St. Etiennes Timothee Kolodziejczak (45th) was sent off. Marquinhos with a double pack (45th + 2, 90th + 1) and Angel Di Maria (79th) scored for PSG. Lionel Messi shone with three assists.
With this, PSG extended their lead in the standings and are now with 40 points ahead of Nice (26 points).
