The daily topics are traditionally broadcast from Hamburg. But there are exceptions. On the anniversary of the pogrom night 85 years ago, the makers are once again broadcasting a live broadcast – this time from Bitterfeld.

The ““Tagesthemen” will continue its live broadcasts and will broadcast from Saxony-Anhalt on November 9th. The special edition of the news program will be broadcast from Bitterfeld-Wolfen to commemorate the pogrom night 85 years ago and on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, said the leading Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR). Tuesday. In addition to a report by presenter Jessy Wellmer about the mood in the city 34 years after the fall of the Wall and the economic situation, it is also about Jewish life in Central Germany.

“November 9th is a day of remembrance of the pogroms in 1938 and also of the political upheavals such as the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, which is also directly linked to my biography,” said moderator Wellmer. “Especially in these times, it is socio-politically important to pay particular attention to this historically ambivalent day.” With Bitterfeld-Wolfen they chose a place that represents a lot of what was missed in the GDR and after reunification, but where there are now many positive developments to report, emphasized Helge Fuhst, second editor-in-chief of ARD-Aktuell .

According to NDR, the special edition will be broadcast from the Industrial and Film Museum in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. The “Tagesthemen” are usually produced in a studio in Hamburg. However, there have been several exceptions in which the show was hosted entirely or partially away from home. The “Tagesthemen” were broadcast from Washington in 2020, from Kiev last year and from Istanbul this year. According to a spokeswoman for the station, it is the tenth broadcast outside the studio in the past five years. This year it is the third broadcast on site.
