News in video: Spectacular photos from Mars show mysterious crater

Watch the video: Like a giant eye – new images of Mars show eerie crater.

A new image captured by the camera on ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft shows what appears to be a giant eye that appears to be staring at the stars.
But the ESA recording should probably not give you goosebumps more than help you better understand the geology and history of Mars.
The crater, 30 kilometers across, about the size of a terrestrial city, lies in a region on Mars’ southern hemisphere known as Aonia Terra.
The as yet unnamed crater and many others in the region are believed to have been formed by massive impacts around 4 billion years ago.
Images like these also allow conclusions to be drawn about the formation of the Earth, because on the barren and geologically much calmer Mars, some evidence of cosmic influences has been preserved that can help to understand more turbulent times in the history of the solar system.
