Juliette Binoche, Penélope Cruz, Jamie Foxx – or Sandra Hülser? The German actress is very present at the Gotham Awards.

The German actress Sandra Hülser (45, “Toni Erdmann”) has a chance of winning a US film trophy with her supporting role in the drama “The Zone of Interest”. As the distributors of the Gotham Awards announced on Tuesday (local time), the film by British director Jonathan Glazer was also nominated in the “Screenplay” and “Best International Film” categories.

In “The Zone of Interest” Hülser plays the wife of concentration camp commandant Rudolf Höß (Christian Friedel), who lives with his family in a luxurious house right next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

In addition to Hülser, the ten nominated supporting actors include Juliette Binoche (“Beloved Cook”), Penélope Cruz (“Ferrari”), Claire Foy (“All of Us Strangers”), Jamie Foxx (“They Cloned Tyrone”) and Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) in the race.

With four nominations, including Best Picture, the sci-fi drama All of Us Strangers leads this year’s Gotham Awards competition. The legal drama “Anatomy of a Case”, in which Sandra Hülser plays a writer who is accused of murdering her husband in their house, has two chances of winning (screenplay and international film). French director Justine Triet’s drama was this year’s winning film at the Cannes Festival.

The Gotham Awards, which have been presented since 1991, are considered the start of the trophy season, which ends in March with the Oscars. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 27th in New York. A small group of critics and filmmakers decide on the awards. Previous Gotham Award winners that went on to win Oscars include films like “Moonlight,” “Spotlight,” “Birdman” and “Nomadland.”
