New York: Floods paralyze roads and traffic

After heavy rain, parts of New York are under water: subways and airports in the US metropolis were partially paralyzed. New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island to the east and the Hudson River Valley to the north. People were urged not to use flooded roads.

New York subway almost fails

“There is very limited subway service due to severe flooding. Services are suspended in many stations,” the subway company said in online services. “Please stay home if you don’t need to drive.”

The National Weather Service warned of flooding throughout Friday. In total, up to 18 centimeters of rain could fall. The rain came from a low pressure area over the Atlantic coast that pulled in moist air from the ocean. In September 2021, Hurricane Ida hit the region hard and brought severe flooding. At that time, 13 people died, many of them in basement apartments.
