New way of living: A floating city is being built in the Maldives

Watch the video: Home for 20,000 people – a floating city is being built in the Maldives.

The Maldives is preparing for a rising sea level and is also betting on cities on the water. A floating city for 20,000 residents is currently being built just ten minutes by boat from Malé, the capital of the Maldives. It will be the world’s largest floating city ever. The project is carried out by Dutch Dockland. The city, which is expected to contain 5,000 houses, is not a futuristic architectural vision but a practical solution to the harsh reality of rising sea levels. To keep the houses in place, they are attached to a large concrete hull anchored to the seabed. So that residents don’t get seasick as the city gently sways with the waves, it will be built in the middle of a 200-hectare lagoon surrounded by natural coral reefs that act as breakwaters. In addition to housing, the city will also include shopping centers, hospitals, schools and leisure facilities. The first units should be ready in the near future, and the first residents should move in at the beginning of 2024. The entire floating city should finally be completely ready for occupancy in 2027.
