New sewing room in Unterschleißheim – district of Munich

A sewing room for anyone interested will open its doors for the first time on Tuesday, October 4th, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Alexander-Pachmann-Strasse 40 in Unterschleißheim. The offer is aimed at anyone who would like to sew under supervision. Children are also welcome. No sewing courses are offered, but assistance will be given if necessary and the material will be made available.

Six years ago, the Asylum Helpers’ Group, which is currently being dissolved, set up a sewing workshop in the accommodation on Siemensstrasse. Clothing was changed there, and pillows and blankets were sewn to make the premises in the accommodation more homely. Numerous donations enabled the circle of helpers to buy sewing machines and fabrics. A lot has also been donated. After the Asylum Helpers’ Group lost its premises, the employees were looking for a new place to live. Finally it was found.

Andrea Kaltenbach from the neighborhood help, which provides the rooms, is convinced that the project fits in well with their offers. The sewing room is also looked after by the former members of the helpers’ group, Monika Perbey, Christiane Seddick, Eva Rauch and Angelika Hebestedt, who have already moved to their new domicile with bag and baggage. The third person in the group is Gabi Schmid-Scherr, head of the Awo social department store Klawotte in Unterschleißheim.

It has long been her wish to establish a sewing workshop in Unterschleißheim. “Unfortunately, Klawotte doesn’t have the space for that,” says Schmid-Scherr. But she wants to support the new workshop in Unterschleißheim in a different way. Schmid-Scherr: “We as Klawotte can supply a lot of material that would otherwise have to be disposed of. It is also planned to sew smaller items such as bags and blankets, which we can then sell at a Christmas market or at a summer festival.”
