New production of the “Merry Wives of Windsor” in the Gärtnerplatztheater – Munich

The woman wanders around the stage tirelessly cleaning, tidying up and putting things in order. She, virtually textless and yet expansively embodied by Angelika Sedlmeier, knows how to use her carpet beater. It is the women who are active in this opera who are making things right. So in the end Sir John is plagued according to the ladies’ plan by cute, glittering elf insects. To fast-paced, consistently airy orchestral music, they lovingly abuse him, pinch him gently, prick him carefully. For a moment it looks as if the knight himself wants to join in the dancing. This is how Otto Nicolai’s comically fantastic opera “The Merry Wives of Windsor” ends in the new production, for which the singing ensemble and the team around Brigitte Fassbaender received generous applause.
