New ponds for the Fröttmaninger Heide – District of Munich

In order to safeguard the diversity of animals and plants in the Fröttmaninger Heide, the Heath Area Association will carry out various maintenance measures in the protected area until the end of February. The interventions are intended to create a mosaic of habitats for specialized animal and plant species. Bushy nutrient-poor grassland and gravel soils are freed from woody growth. In order to strengthen the green toad population, existing ponds are being compacted and new ones created to serve as spawning waters. The aim is to create reliable water points that can be filled if necessary. Because in hot summers, many of the small bodies of water dry up before the young green toads can go ashore on their own. As the heathland association reports, all measures have been clarified with the responsible nature conservation authority of the city of Munich. Visitors are asked to be considerate and to observe signs and barriers.
